In creating MTV’s contribution to the decline of Western civilization, perverse clay-animation wizard Eric Fogel took the same techniqu used in lovable children’s specials and molded it into a twisted, bloody spectacle combining the best elements of professional wrestling, celebrity gossip shows, and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. It’s no surprise his hysterical result became popular enough to spawn its own series of home video highlights.

This clay-per-view special has legendary referee Mills Lane, tuxedo-clad announcers Johnny Gomez and Nick Diamond, and brassy interviewer Stacey Cornbred presenting as much muscle and mayhem as the rich and famous can deliver. Eerily detailed clay contestants include “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Cindy Crawford, Janeane Garofalo, and comedian Chris Rock, who attempts to feed Adam Sandler into a giant razor-sharp fan. On the minus side, the editing is fast and furious–at 45 minutes, the collection winds down just before it wears you out. The humor tends to be topical and relies on the same meat-rending joke played out in countless different ways: annoying celebrities-of-the-moment get all the agony they deserve. On the plus side, this one joke can be pretty darn funny. When snarling songbird Celine Dion starts yanking out punk rocker Keith Flint’s body-piercings, you don’t really need to know a thing about the players that isn’t mentioned in the nonstop color commentary. Despite your higher instincts, you just start laughing… after all, as they say, it’s just clay. –Grant Balfour

Martial Law star Sammo Hung is Dirty Head, an acrobatic servant with a nasty case of mange and a skull harder than a helmet, in this early Hong Kong costume adventure. The ambitious and arrogant Master Chan puts a contract out on Dirty Head because a prophetic funeral ritual gives his servant a leg up on becoming the next King of China. The episodic film chronicles his slapstick stay at a temple, where he hones his martial arts abilities alongside a pair of practical-joking classmates, and his ascension from wandering fighter to revolutionary leader as he attracts a small band of acolytes (including one fighter with some serious gender confusion issus). This 1980 production is full of goofy Three Stooges-style humor and Sammo’s mugging, and while the cartoony sound-effect punctuation can get downright excruciating, his acrobatic kung fu is amazing, a fluid and energetic style rarely seen in martial arts productions of the period. The production suffers from pathetic dubbing, and the cropped widescreen film has lackluster color and numerous scratches. –Sean Axmaker

Ten years after John DeBello made the frowzy, low-budget Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, he brought the fleshy fruit back for a murderous encore. Like the first film, it works as a parody of horror-movie conventions (and it repeatedly makes fun of itself, Mad-magazine style), but this time the budget is higher. There’s a great, ongoing send-up of product placement, plus a juicy role for the oft-underutilized John Astin, as the evil genius this kind of movie needs. Just to keep everything moving, another exploitation film keeps cutting in: Big-Breasted Girls Go to the Beach and Take Their Tops Off. It ain’t high art, but this movie knows its audience. A young George Clooney plays one of the heroes.

Return to Horror High is a convoluted cheesefest that tries to be spoof and horror movie at the same time, feebly prefiguring Scream. A movie crew is filming a slasher picture at a high school where a series of murders actually occurred; the killings begin again–or are they simply staged for the production? The answer to this qustion is distinctly uninvolving, but it involves a lot of fake blood. Familiar faces include Vince Edwards and Brady Bunch star Maureen McCormick (a uniformed cop), plus–until he becomes the first victim–George Clooney. –Robert Horton

Part of what was touted as a late-1980s revival of Westerns (and you can see how long that lasted), this good-looking, empty-brained film was like a spurs-and-chaps version of a Joel Schumacher movie, filled with pretty faces, prettier imagery, and absolutely no new ideas. The idiotically grinning Emilio Estevez is cast as Billy the Kid, who slowly accumulates a gang of Brat Pack buddies (Lou Diamond Phillips, Kiefer Sutherland, Dermot Mulroney) and fashions them into a group of male models with six-guns. The action is confused and the script is trite, though Terence Stamp is intriguing as the old reprobate who helps the gang get its act together. Followed by an even worse sequl. –Marshall Fine
